How to Prevent Teenage Acne by Taking Precautionary Measures

by Lisa on May 1, 2011

Acne is a typical problem for practically everyone, especially during the adolescent years. It’s changing hormones during the teen years that makes acne virtually universal. Once you realize why people develop acne you are going to be better prepared to avoid it altogether.

It’s plugged pores in your skin that set off Acne. An oily substance called sebum is produced by glands below the surface of your skin. Your pores ought to allow this sebum to reach the surface of your skin to keep your skin moist and flexible.

Your skin sheds old cells and replaces them with new cells. The oily sebum can cause these old cells to bunch together to block the pores.

Several weeks before you become aware of anything, these clumps of oily dead skin cells have plugged up numerous pores. The sebum which is supposed to reach the surface of your skin has become blocked and starts to amass in the pores and glands under your skin. Bacteria begins to multiply and an infection is under way.

After a while you begin to notice these growing and infected clumps of oil and old skin. These accumulations become blackheads and whiteheads or pimples. You’ve got acne.

Acne is mainly prevalent throughout the teenage years. Why is that?

As youngsters begin to mature the body begins generating new hormones. Young people, both male and female, start to produce testosterone. Testosterone results in a chemical reaction that causes the glands to generate more sebum. The increase in sebum causes the skin to become oily and particles of old skin cells clump together and begin to block some of the pores.

In the early twenties, young people have more capability to regulate the effect testosterone has on sebum production. A reduced amount of sebum causes less clumping of old cells and less potential for acne. Adults occasionally develop acne although their skin is less elastic and drier than that of a young person. Because of this, adult acne treatment differs from that used for young people.

What can be done during the period of excess sebum production to cut back on the occurrence of acne?

The most effective thing should be to keep the skin free of an overload of oils. You will need to cleanse your skin a minimum of twice a day. Many people advocate a mild, non-alkaline cleanser instead of normal soaps.

Eat healthy foods. Avoid foods that you notice cause you face to feel oily. Those foods will not be good for you. Eat unprocessed foods like vegetables, fruits, meats, whole grain breads, and dairy products. Avoid manufactured foods with a lot of sugar or high fructose corn syrup.

Stress can produce added hormones that worsen acne. So, avoid stressful situations and work off your stress with exercise.

Avoid putting oily creams or cosmetics on your skin. These just add to the oils already on your skin in addition to particles that help block your pores.

Keep your skin free of excess oils and you will significantly reduce the incidence of ache.
